The Danger of using AI to write your content

As soon as I read anything that smells of ChatGPT, I must admit, I Instantly disengage.
I’m seeing more and more content written by ChatGPT than ever before now. From newsletters, website copy, instagram posts, video scripts. And it really is so obvious now as we’ve gotten used to seeing it.
You can see the that the person hasn’t personally written it word for word, because all ChatGPT wording is structured the same with super polished vocabulary. I know it can be tempting to get it to write what you want, and yes it does explain it very well. But if you’re running a personal brand online, and everything you write online starts to just look and sound the same as everybody else. Then it’s not very personal… and you will just blend in.
We are very good at noticing this as humans, we adapt very quickly and we can sense when something sounds similar to what you’ve read / heard a few times. And this is what is happening to me now every time I read / listen to content. It instantly rings those bells and I won’t even bother to read on.
This is more so advice for myself too; because when ChatGPT first came out, I used it to write some of my scripts for a few of my instagram reels. I was intrigued with its abilities and was very impressed, and I ran with it, because it just saved me about 2 hours worth of time and I could get straight into filming.
But the more videos I saw coming up from other creators, they sounded kind of like mine, the same structure, the same cliffhangers.
“Storytelling isn’t an add on, it’s the entire narrative”.
“And Honestly? It’s the best thing I ever did”
I knew then I had to steer away from that ASAP. I noticed this similarity quickly, and I felt like oh gosh, this really isn’t me, I’m a very expressive person and I’m just letting some machine talk for me.
Your audience may think you can’t be bothered to write your own content, they will lose that connection with you because they know in their head what they’re reading is not written by you.
But most importantly, you are removing the ‘you’ from your content.
And It’s never been more important to be just you online.
People are going to start craving content with a human feel more and more as AI gets bigger and more commonly used.
People will be seeking creators and creative professionals that feel unapologetically themselves and dare I say it “authentic”, I know that’s become a buzzword of late.
The ones that are truly themselves will stand out from the sea of polished content with the tapestry of AI riddled throughout.
It may sound like I’m anti AI here, I’m absolutely not, I think it’s fantastic for certain things, but it is not a replacement device, it is a tool. It shouldn’t be creating final outcomes of your work, or your words.
If you are the type to really struggle with writing and ChatGPT helps you here, then that’s amazing, use it. But don’t just copy and paste it’s output, because it is not you. That’s not your tone, they’re not your words. Rewrite it how you would say it, your audience will be thankful.
I may be biased here, but keeping my ability to write is very big value of mine, as one day I want to write a book.
Remember as soon as humans stop practicing things like writing, we will soon forget how to. Just like how we forgot how to add up multiplications when the calculator was invented, we forgot how to remember phone numbers when speed dial was invented. And, we’ve forgot how to communicate in public because of our phones.
Writing is a huge thing we should want to be able to remember how to do, it’s a way of expressing ourselves, it’s a form of personal communication. Don’t give up your ability to do this for the sake of saving time.
I feel better just writing this because it’s been on my mind the past week.
Embrace imperfection, I’m sure there’s a few spelling mistakes and grammar no no’s in this, but who cares, this is my raw emotion and I’m communicating it to you the way I intended too.
Let me know how you personally feel about this. This is written mainly intended for personal creators, not brands or business’ using AI Copy; although yeah can apply to them too.
PS: I know it’s been a while since I’ve sent one of these newsletters to you! I’ve just been chocker blocker with work. And I only want to write something that I thinks worth writing about.
Hope everyone’s having a fabulous week.
Much love, Frankie.
